Medium-term EU financial assistance provided to non-euro area Member States facing serious balance-of-payments difficulties.
History note (en):
Introduced in the 1970s, the medium-term financial assistance (MTFA) and Community loan mechanisms provided mutual financial support for Member States facing serious balance-of-payments difficulties. In 1988, they were merged into the balance-of-payments facility. From 2002, this financial assistance has been for Member States that have not adopted the euro.
