Ocean coastline, including major islands. Coastline is matched to land and water polygons. The Caspian Sea, which is technically a lake, is included. The ocean coastline, the foundation for building all of NEV, primarily derives from World Data Bank 2 with modest generalization applied via line simplification in Adobe Illustrator. The Antarctica coast derives from NASA Mosaic of Antarctica.

Derived from 10m coastline. Continental polygons broken into smaller, contiguous pieces to avoid having too many points in any one polygon, facilitating faster data processing in certain software applications.

Coastline accuracy is suspect for northern Russia and southern Chile.
Some rank 5 land should be reclassified as rank 6.

Additional small ocean islands ranked to two levels of relative importance. Derived from 1:250,000 World Vector Shoreline. Relatively few minor islands shown in polar areas with selective edits elsewhere. Minor islands contain more relative detail than do the islands included with the main 10m ocean coastline data. Ocean bathymetry and ocean polygon are not punched out for minor islands, nor are they included in land polygon or any country or state (admin-0 and admin-1) polygons.

Great barrier reef off Australia and reefs elsewhere could use better definition. Should replace entire dataset with VMAP0 reefs, which will require considerable generalization and fitting to coastlines and atolls.

Rivers primarily derive from World Data Bank 2. Double line rivers in WDB2 were digitized to created single line drainages. All rivers received manual smoothing and position adjustments to fit shaded relief generated from SRTM Plus elevation data, which is more recent and (presumably) more accurate.

Lake centerlines obtained by manually drawing connecting segments in reservoirs. When available, Admin 0 and 1 political boundaries in reservoirs serve as the lake centerlines.

Ranked by relative importance. Includes name and line width attributes for creating tapered drainages.
